What I’ve Been Watching on Netflix

I love nothing more than cosying up in bed, wrapped up in my duvet and dressing gown, and watching some good tele. This has been an ongoing post over the last year. I share a Netflix account with Adam, but he uses it a lot more than I do. However, there has been a few series and films that I have watched over the past year, some really good ones and others that I have mixed opinions on, so I thought I’d share them with you…

SAFE – When Tom, a winded surgeon’s daughter goes missing, with her boyfriend. He goes on the search for her, with help of his new ‘girlfriend’ and police detective Sophie. However, during his frantic search, he ends up uncovering a huge web of dark secrets, about those closest to him within his gated community. This is so binge-worthy! I watched this with mum and she’s one of those people who can only watch one, max two, episodes a day and I just wanted to watch it all in one sitting, I was fully engrossed throughout the whole series! Mum loved it too, and she’s not easily pleased when it comes to a lot TV series and films (9/10).

Sex Education – I was a little late to the party watching this series. I’ve seen so many people talking about it and I finally got round to watching this series. An awkward teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an unofficial sex therapy clinic at school, despite him being a virgin. This series could quite easily have been embarrassing, but instead, it is a glorious, heartfelt, eye-wateringly funny creation…like effortlessly funny. It not only addresses sex and relationships in a high school environment but other issues too. I finished this in less than 2 days, it’s a great series and must watch; just maybe not around your parents… (10/10)

Gavin and Stacey – I had to show Adam how amazing Gavin and Stacey is, and he didn’t believe me at first, but now he loves it too. If you don’t love Gavin and Stacey, I mean who are you! If you haven’t watched Gavin and Stacey, it’s a British sitcom written by James Cordon and Ruth Jones, who also star in the series, which follows the relationship between Englishman Gavin and Welshwoman Stacey, and their very different families. The storyline is also around their relationships with their best-friends Smithy (James Cordon) and Vanessa `Nessa’ Jenkins (Ruth Jones), who hate each other at first sight yet keep hooking up together after several drinks and the consequences of this. It is hilarious seeing everything unfold and the different family relationships leave me in creases (10/10).

Birdbox – Oh my days this Netflix Original didn’t half take the world by storm. A mysterious force wipes out the population; if you see it, you die. Those whom have survived have to avoid coming face-to-face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fear. A women and her children set off on a journey down the river and through the woods, to a place that may offer sanctuary and a safe place. But, to get there they must make the whole journey blindfolded. This had Adam and myself hooked and this has an innovative story-line, however there a lot of unanswered questions and to me the twist plot-ending was something that gave food for thought. I can’t quite understand the huge hype around this film though (5/10).

Ru Paul’s Drag Race – I started watching this ages ago, and got addicted up until about season 3, but then Netflix decided to delete all the early seasons so I stopped watching it. I definitely want to get into watching it again, because it was such a good trashy series to watch (7/10).

Abducted in Plain Sight – This is the most recent one I’ve watched from this list. I love true-crime; I mean I do study a Criminology degree for a reason! This documentary-film following the story of Jan Broberg, who was kidnapped TWICE by trusted family-friend and neighbour Robert Berchtold in the ‘70s, once when she was 12 and then again when she was 14. The story is told by all of those involved, including Jan herself. This creepy and dark story left me completely baffled with how many twists there is in the story, and the manipulation involved (8/10).

What do you recommend on Netflix?

Oh man, I love RuPaul’s drag race. I only started watching it from season 6, and I’m completely obsessed. Might watch it from the very beginning though. Abducted in plain sight infuriated me!! I couldn’t believe her parents were so naive! Great picks. I’m also hooked on Instant Hotel… it’s so sassy!

How did you find Birdbox? I watched Boy in Striped Pyjamas when it first came out years ago and it breaks my heart but is an amazing film and Anne of Green Gables is on my to watch list. Thanks for the recommendations!

I have seen the first episode of Sex Education and it reminded of Skins and The End of the Fucking World – both classic English dramas. I have been enjoying You recently, a mix between PLL and Gossip Girl. Would recommend both if you have not seen already and Gilmore Girls. Also Suits.
