I was kindly invited to a VIP Cocktail Masterclass at Jalou York last week. I’ve been to Jalou many times, and I LOVE their cocktail range, so you can imagine how excited I was when the invite dropped into my inbox! I’m currently a committee member of my university’s cocktail society, so this event was right up my street. However, I’d only been invited to one small event previously, and I was so nervous about attending. Thankfully, they offered me a plus-one for the event, so my boyfriend tagged along with me for the evening.
Jalou only opened in York only last year…it’s surprising how many times I’ve already been thinking about this! It took over the Grade 2 listed building that was previously known as Parish, bringing back all the freshers feels! It’s located just over the bridge down Micklegate, so is a short walk from the station and all the local bus stops.
I love the interior of Jalou, and the contemporary vibe it brings; with chilled ambient lighting throughout the day, to changing colour centrepiece giving it that nightlife vibe as it comes later into the evening and the DJ starts.
Once we’d all arrived, we were taken upstairs into the exclusive lounge booked out for us, but anyone is welcome to book it out for themselves, maybe for birthdays or a hen party. We were welcomed by two lovely members of staff, and we all sat together and had a little catch up over a glass of prosecco and some shots, what more can you want really!?. At this point though, I had the same worry of not fitting in as everyone pulled out their fancy cameras, and I just sat there with my little iPhone…but hey everyone’s at different levels, maybe that’ll be me someday.
We all got to choose two cocktails each to make, and had full choice of the menu…yes I repeat full choice of the menu. I opted for the legendary Cookie Monster and a classic Pornstar Martini. The Cookie Monster is cookie syrup, vanilla vodka and baileys, topped with white chocolate (blue) cream, to make a little Cookie Monster! The Pornstar Martini is vodka, passionfruit liqeur, vanilla syrup, and pineapple juice; and you get a little shot of prosecco on the side! Adam went for, the Hendricks Lamar and a Flaming Zombie, embarrassingly he did a better job than me! If you want to check out their full cocktail range, click here…you will be amazed.
Everyone went up in little groups to make their choices, and it just felt so personal and special. The barmaids showed us individually step by step, and every detail that goes into the wonderful cocktails they serve. Despite slight heavy handed pouring of the alcohol on my behalf, all the drinks came out looking amazing, and they tasted even better too!
Another highlight of the evening was meeting some wonderful new bloggers that I hadn’t met before. We spent a good time chatting with Louise and her lovely mum, getting to know one another over drinks, and of course had a little boogie too! Click here to check out her blog, she is amazing!
Overall, we had a wonderful evening and were so well looked after, entertained and it just felt very special. I feel pretty privileged to have been invited, as my little blog is like my own little secret world, so it’s nice to see where blogging can take you and the opportunities that come with it.
If you’re ever in York, I totally recommend stopping by Jalou, because their cocktail menu is amazing.
